The following tutorial was written in 2011.
The model used is a Breyer Classic Mustang Foal.
The paints used were citadel acrylics. Approximate costs are based on you buying all the items needed for this tutorial including paints, a Stablemate scale body and brushes. This horse was painted using an airbrush but it is assumed you will use hand painted acrylics and pastels for the price estimate.

The Base Colour
Step 1
Mix together a very light flesh tone colour by mixing flesh tone with white. If you are using an airbrush this should be around the consistency of milk.

Step 2
You will need to start with a white prepped model horse as the base white colour will show through when the model is finished. If you have prepped using grey primer add a coat of white primer on top.

Step 3
Add a layer of paint over the body of the foal and the top of the foal's legs. Add a little bit more colour to your mix (I recommend mixing a flesh tone with white and then adding more flesh tone) and shade the face, ears and neck. Slowly build up your colour tone using reference to darken the body.

Step 4
Use a dark grey pastel to shade the foal's puzzle, genitals and inside the ears.

Finishing Your Piece
Finish your model horse by painting the details such as eyes and hooves. You can add some white markings if you like.
Make sure to seal and sign your horse before glossing the eyes and hooves.
