The following tutorial was written in 2011.
The model used is a Horsing Around Pepys foal.
The paints used are both the Citadel range from Games Workshop and Humbrol acrylics. For the pricing it is assumed you are using these paints and painting a Stablemate model horse but this tutorial will work for all scales.

The Basics
Step 1
Use your reference to get an idea of what the pattern should look like.
Mark the pattern out first with a light grey pencil to help you. Then fill this in with a medium grey acrylic paint.

Step 2
We are now going to add depth to the colour. Start with a red brown pastel. Add this over the stifle, neck and eye.
Seal your model.

Add white pastel to the stifle and elbow of the model.
Seal your model.

Add dark brown paint around the outside of the red brown areas.

Add black pastel around the outside of edges of each of the grey markings. Also add grey to the ears, muzzle, eyes and fetlock.
Seal your model.

Spend time adding fine layers of white paint over the white markings.
The base colour is now finished! Finish off the details and you'll have an adorable new custom foal.

Finishing Off
Use hand painted acrylics to finish off your horse's eyes and hooves. Add any white markings you want your horse to have. Remember if you want them to have white leg markings they should have light hooves, but if not they should have dark hooves.
Give your horse a final coat of sealant and then gloss the hooves and eyes.
