The following tutorial was written in 2011.
The model used is a Schleich Lipizzaner Foal.
This tutorial was completed using airbrushed acrylics (Citadel range) and pastels. For the price estimate it is assumed you are using hand painted acrylics or pastels. It is assumed you are painting a Stablemate model horse but this tutorial will work for all scales.

The Base Colour
Step 1
Use a ginger paint (Vermin Brown was used here) to cover the main body of the foal. Leave the muzzle, legs and tail all lighter gradually darkening the paint around the neck, quarters, back and joints.

Step 2
Add a red brown to the neck, face, withers, back and the top of the legs.

I have used black pastel for this but paint could also be used.
Add black to the muzzle, mane, genitals and the tip of the tail. Add a very small amount to the eyes and the inside of the ears as well.

Finishing Your Piece
Finish your model by adding any white markings you like and completing details such as the eyes.
Make sure to seal and sign your work before glossing the eyes and hooves.
