The following tutorial was written in 2011.
The model used is a Breyer Stablemate G3 Tennessee Walking Horse.
The paints used are both the Citadel range from Games Workshop and Humbrol acrylics. For the pricing it is assumed you are using these paints and painting a Stablemate model horse but this tutorial will work for all scales.

Step 1
If you have not primed your horse with white primer do this now. You will need a white base for this project.

Step 2
Add a coat of light grey paint over the entire horse. You can save paint by leaving the mane and tail white (the tail is also a good place to hold the model for painting).
We used Humbrol #87 for this base coat.

Add dark grey paint to:
Head
Neck
Shoulder
Front Legs
Quarters
Back Legs
Topline
Belly
Use reference to help you as some bits may be slightly lighter than others. Make sure to blend well with your light grey base coat.

Use an old brush that has clumped up, cotton bud or silicone brush. Drawn a straight line down the horse's topline from the base of the mane to the tail.

Step 7
Using black pastel add some shading to the muzzle, knees and hocks using black pastel. You may also want to add stripes to the legs for further primative markings.

Finishing Off
Use hand painted acrylics to finish off your horse's eyes and hooves. Add any white markings you want your horse to have. Remember if you want them to have white leg markings they should have light hooves, but if not they should have dark hooves.
Give your horse a final coat of sealant and then gloss the hooves and eyes.
