Important Proviso - Every show is different, every country is different. This is just a generalised guide, I have used splits at my own live shows to help guide people. Please check with individual show hosts before entering.

Below is a generalised guide to help you get your horse in the right class at live shows. For each breed I have done the assignment in order, that means that you should start with the top class, if that doesn't exist move down to the next one and then the next one and so on and so forth.

​Please note when showing model horses that subtle differences in class names can cause them to mean two very different things. There is a huge difference between 'British Ponies' and 'British Native Ponies' with the first encompassing all British pony breeds and the second only the 13 official UK Native Ponies.

It is worth noting that if there is a class for that particular breed (e.g. Arabian) that is obviously where it should go. Unless these are common I haven't included them. Always check for this first, particularly at a specialised show.

This list is based on what is standard in the UK in my experience. Not everyone will agree with it and it will not be the same for every show so please take it with a pinch of salt. Always check with the show schedule and show holder prior to attending a show if you are not sure.
